GLOSSARY OF TERMS

A

Anesthesia -- agent used for numbing, relaxing, or sedating. Types used include local, regional, general, and intravenous sedation.

C

Cannula -- thin, smooth, blunt, surgical suction rod inserted and used to vacuum the fat layer that lies deep beneath the skin. As it's pushed and pulled through the fat, the cells are broken up and then suctioned out.

Cellulite -- is a medical term used to describe the cottage cheese appearance of the thighs seen in some women. It is uncommon in men.

E

Emulsion -- mixing together of two liquids so that small droplets are formed, for example with oil and water

Endermologie -- This is a French technique used to smooth the skin and reduce the appearance of cellulite

External Ultrasound Assisted Liposuction -- A method of using a combination of wetting solution and high frequency ultrasound to loosen fat prior to liposuction and to dissolve small amounts of fat without suction.

F

Fluid Injection -- technique in which a medicated solution is injected into fatty areas prior to there removal to ease the procedure, reduce blood loss/bruising, and provide anesthesia during and after surgery.

Lidocaine -- medicated solution injected into areas treated during the tumescent or super wet techniques

Lidocaine toxicity -- result of too much anesethic fluid (containing lidocaine) being administered, causing a collection of fluid in the lungs

Lipoplasty -- another name for liposuction

Liposuction -- (spot fat reduction):contouring and shaping the body.

P

Premarket Notification 510(k) -- A company that intends to market a device must submit to FDA a Premarket Notification, or 510(k) submission, at least 90 days before hand. The submission must contain enough information to show that a device is substantially the same as a device already available A similar Premarket Notification is required if the device is significantly different, or might affect the safety or effectiveness of the device.

S

(SAL) suction assisted lipectomy -- another name for liposuction sonic sculpturing: another term for ultrasonic liposuction

Skin type classification -- method used to determine how much fat can be removed based on skin elasticity

Super-wet technique -- is similar to the tumescent technique, except that lesser amounts of fluid are used.

T

Tumescent or SuperwetTechnique -- Ultrasonic liposuction must be used in a wet environment. If the ultrasound probe is moved through dry tissue it will cause burns to the tissue. In order to keep the tissue wet, it is injected with large volumes of IV fluid before surgery This is called the tumescent or super wet method.

U

(USABC) ultrasonically assisted body contouring -- another term for ultrasonic liposuction ultrasound

(UAL) ultrasound-assisted lipoplasty -- The technique is similar to liposuction but may allow removal of larger amounts of fat with less damage to the surrounding tissue. The fat is broken up or liquefied with ultrasound. This allows it to be removed more easily and with less loss of blood.

Ultrasuction -- term introduced by many to describe the combination of ultrasonics and liposuction

Ultrasonic liposuction -- Ultrasonic liposuction is a method of removing fat from the subcutaneous space. The fat is first broken up by ultrasound and then removed by suction. The skin may also be tightened.
